Happy Birthday America !

Good morning, dear friends.  Today, all across our great land folks are preparing to celebrate the 4th.  There will be small celebrations and huge family gatherings, all celebrating the birth of our country as an independent nation.   image

On this day, let us all take a few moments to remember those who bravely fought, the many who paid the ultimate sacrifice, and those currently serving in the military to ensure we remain a free nation.  As we pause, the words of former President, Ronald Reagan are, in my opinion, certainly worth considering, “We’re blessed with the opportunity to stand for something ~ for liberty and freedom and fairness. And these are things worth fighting for, worth devoting our lives to.”

For me, one thing which always seems to make the day so special, as well as festive, is our dear ~ “Red, White, and Blue” which will be flying in all her majestic glory everywhere.  From coast to coast, in cities and small towns, all will know it is America’s birthday.

So, celebrate the day.  Enjoy your family and friends.  All the festivities.  And remember why we celebrate.  Let us work together to keep our land a most special place, not only for ourselves, but for future generations.

Sunday Thoughts ~ June 16, 2019

Good morning, dear friends.  June is such a lovely month and my thoughts this morning are all about the beauty this month holds.  Roses are blooming, the leaves and grass are luscious green, the sky is blue, and the warm air is full of birdsong and fragrance.  June, with her idyllic days, is truly a gift from above.

Public gardens and parks are dressed in their finest to welcome all their many visitors.  And, among these beautiful places are rose gardens.  They are always clipped and snipped to perfection and have such a grand variety of magnificent roses with exquisite blooms… simply out of this world.  Just waiting for you to come and visit.

Spring Unfolding In ‘Le Jardin’

“Spring turns to summer and the leaves on the trees switch from shades of shamrock-green to a richer, more luxurious forest-green.  I spy, from the comfort of my sitting room, the much-loved landmarks that cosset my little home and make note of the delicate changes that each week bestows upon them.  The air is infused with the scent of young grass and the birds are in full throat with songs as pure and clear as icy water.  It is a joy to stand still for a spell and breathe in the pleasures of the present.” ~ Freya Turrill

Good morning, dear friends.  In the hills of West Virginia, spring is slowly moving toward summer.  So before we become too deep in summer, do find a comfy chair, your coffee or tea, and come along with me as I share “spring unfolding in le jardin.”

Daffodils ~ the harbinger of spring.  I was so waiting for these beauties.  Isn’t everyone after winter?  The lovely blue and white tulipiere was screaming for daffodil blooms.  The tulipiere was a gift from a dear friend, her mom was my beloved high school Botany and Zoology teacher.  This lovely treasure sat on our dining room buffet all winter patiently waiting for blooms.

It is a sure sign spring has arrived when the tree peonies bloom, always late April to the very first week of May.  This pink one is my favorite, I named her Princess Cathy.  She was a gift from my former neighbor and dear friend, Cathy. She is a stunning beauty.

Another beauty is our purplish/red tree peony, Shimadaijin.  In this photo of her in the garden, she appears redder in color.

While in the vase she appears more purple.  Actually, she is really violet in color.

Tree peonies are so special.  Their petals are like tissue paper.  Their bloom time is not long, but they bless us with their beauty every moment they are in bloom.

The lilacs were especially pretty this year.  I do not know the name of the white lilac but was told it is a Madame Lemoine.  It was started from a tiny sprig of a neighbors shrub.

The fattest and most scrumptious of all flowers, a rare fusion of fluff and majesty, the peony is now coming into bloom. ~ Henry Mitchell, American writer (1923-93)

The first of the Herbaceous Peonies to bloom is always ‘Sunny Girl.’  She is butter yellow in color.

This is ‘Courage.’  Notice the speckles on her petals. God gave her special attention.

‘Red Charm’ is another early beauty.

‘Coral Sunset’ is a stand out in the garden.  Coral peonies take a few years to mature but are well worth the wait.

Another favorite ~ ‘Chiffon Clouds.’  Isn’t she lovely with the raindrops on her petals?

‘Bartzella,’ also wearing raindrops.  Bartzella is an Itoh peony, a cross between a Herbaceous  Peony and a tree peony.

The hand-painted Fenton vase was a birthday gift from my mom many years ago.  It happily holds peonies Mrs. FDR, Bowl of Cream, and Gardenia.  Along with a little Baptisia.

Like the lilacs, the rhododendrons were full of loveliness this year.

One of my oldest garden friends, Baptisia.  Often referred to as ‘False Indigo.’  It is beautiful in a vase with peonies.

Antique Rose, and only blooms once a year.  She was laying in the yard with nothing on which to climb when we purchased our home.  We purchased an arbor for her ~ she has greatly rewarded us.

It is always a surprise to see where the poppies have decided to plant themselves each year.  They have a mind of their own.

So, as I needed ‘something else to do’ and of course more blooms, a few years ago I potted three hydrangeas in urns.  Understand they have to be taken to the garage in the winter.  Mike always finds a place for them and he even sees to it that they have a wee drink from time-to-time.

Hydrangea, Blue Danube is the bluest of the blue hydrangeas.  However, in order to have her bloom in her heavenly blue, I would need to add a soil acidifier to the soil.  There is a fine line when doing this with potted hydrangeas.  Too much will kill the plant.  Therefore, I decided to leave them alone and allow them to turn a natural pink.  I have two of these (one on either side of the arbor) and you can see this one is just beginning to show color.

The Oak Leaf, Leather Leaf hydrangea has an abundance of bloom this year.  I especially enjoy it as summer moves along and the blooms turn a rosy pink.  The leaves become scarlet in the fall.

Good morning, dear friends.  I don’t know about you, but I try to count my blessings every day.  Being sincerely grateful for the blessings in my life seems to make me appreciate them all the more.  I believe we all are grateful for those we love, friends as well as family.  These loving people bless my life daily.  And, have for too many years to count.  But, along with them, there are many other things I am grateful for as well.  Namely, our dear home…
and our beloved garden.

The early morning and evening are the sweetest times in our garden.  With the fragrance of the honeysuckle, jasmine and the Casablanca lilies drifting along in the air, inviting us to stay awhile and enjoy.  Truly, a blessing.  I hope you are blessed with a garden or perhaps, a beautiful view you love from a special place in your home.

Good morning, dear friends.  To me, Sunday seems to be the perfect day to speak of love.  Our world needs so much love and it begins with each of us ~ doesn’t it?   In preparing my Sunday posts, I want them to be of value.  Words or an image we can carry with us throughout the week.  That said, I hope today’s post about love will speak to you.

Ironically, I was preparing this post on Friday when I learned of the nightmare unfolding in the lovely city we called home for thirty-two years ~ Virginia Beach, Virginia.  I spent the last four years of my career with the Virginia Beach City Public Schools in the Human Resources Division.  During my years in Human Resources, I witnessed the ’employment termination’ of many disgruntled employees and often I thought, “I wonder what will become of them.”  I also wondered, what caused them to do the things they did.  I certainly did not know.  But, they knew and possibly others knew also.  

Doesn’t hate, violent behavior and vicious speech all spell ‘lack of love’?  Clearly, I don’t have the answers.  Oh, I wish I did.  But I do know we must find solutions to the violence, and soon. Solutions which will offer hope to those who have lost their way.

As you go about your daily rounds this week, I ask you to think of those who lost their lives, their families, the survivors, my lovely city and the people who call it home.  Because for them ~ “There are moments which mark your life.  Moments, when you realize nothing will ever be the same and time is divided into two parts, before this and after this.” ~ unknown

Oh, Sweet Serenity!

Good morning, dear friends.  Does it make you smile to begin your day in a sweet and peaceful manner?  I will tell you it certainly makes me smile.  And in my heart, I believe it is terribly important for our well being to begin our days in such a way.  Perhaps, my feelings stem from my age or the fact I spent twenty-eight years in middle schools (anything but serene), or that I am an only child.  Whatever the reason, I am most happy when days are peaceful, especially mornings.  And I thought, possibly, you may feel the same. Therefore, I hope you will find this post a lovely way to launch your day ~ enjoying a little ‘sweet serenity.’

If you listen carefully, right before it rains you can hear the plants whispering, “We would like a soft drink from the heavens, not from a watering can or sprinkler, please.”  A soft rain is such a wonderful blessing.  One can almost hear the plants slurping as they enjoy their drink.

Oh, the delicious fragrance of honeysuckle.  And after a rain, the fragrance is even more captivating.

Dear friends,  all across this great land of ours, we are observing Memorial Day Weekend.  A time we have set aside to celebrate and say thanks to all military personnel and their families for the sacrifices they make or have made, for our freedom.  It is especially a time we honor and remember our fallen heroes.  In remembrance of all veterans as well as active service members, I wish you and yours a most beautiful Memorial Day Weekend.  Enjoy your celebrations and be safe!

Norman, and His 250 Gladiolas

Good morning, my friends.  Today, I would like to share a story about my dear friend Norman and ‘his’ 250 gladiolas.  So find your coffee/tea.  I believe this post will make you smile and who knows ~ you just may become inspired to plant gladiolas.

Norman was a retired Navy Commander.  I always had a hard time imagining him in that role, as he was a kind, gentle and happy soul.  Not, that Navy Commanders don’t possess these qualities.  However, I think, their position in the military requires a completely different demeanor.  Norman always wore a huge smile and perhaps his gentle way is what made him such a great teacher.  Yes, after his military retirement, his second career was teaching.  He was a special education teacher at the high school where my husband taught. 

Norman became a wonderful friend to my husband and me.  Always offering to help us with any ongoing project we may have undertaken,  showing up on our doorstep when my mom had surgery and I was unable to travel due to a terrible snow storm, and always sharing the goodness from his garden in the form of something delicious or something gorgeous.  Norman taught me a great deal about gardening and became one of my all-time best friends.

One early June day, Norman arrived at our home carrying a rather large box.  I poured him his usual large glass of tea and we proceeded to the rockers on the back porch, his favorite spot.  He didn’t seem to be his jovial self this particular day.  But after a bit of conversation, he said, “Sandra, do you like gladiolas?”  When I responded with a ‘yes’, little did I know what was in store for me.  Norman went on to explain he was having knee surgery and gardening would be off limits for him the remainder of the summer.  Then he reached over and picked up the large box and shared the contents ~ 250 gladiola corms.

Probably you are wondering, “Why would anyone order 250 gladiolas?”   Well, you see, Norman had a large farm and had great visions of establishing a ‘come and cut’ area for a wide variety of beautiful blooms.  He had ordered the gladiolas before his knee took a downward turn and not wanting the corms to become soft and rot, he was bringing them to me with hopes I would plant them.  Then in the fall, he planned for us to dig and share the corms.

When Norman left that day, Mike became busy with his trusty and well used Troy-Built rototiller, tilling space for 250 gladiolas.  And, I was behind him shaping the rows.  During the next few days, I managed to plant all of the gladiolas, having no idea of the beauty I would soon see.  

Norman’s surgery went well and as the weeks passed, the gladiolas began to peak through the soil.  Under the boiling Virginia sun, our garden quickly became a vast array of color and blooms.  I cut gladiolas by the buckets, filled our home, took them to work, and gave them to everyone I knew.  And, of course, I took them to Norman.  How wonderful it was to see his huge smile again.  To say he was thrilled was a total understatement.

I never see a gladiola without thinking of my dear friend.  Norman not only taught me so much about gardening, but by his example, he taught me a great deal about friendship.  Sadly, my friend passed away shortly before we returned to West Virginia.  I miss him to this day and can still hear his laughter and see his huge smile.  Truly, life hands us gifts as we go along.  I will always be grateful for the gift of knowing Norman, our friendship, and the influence he had on my life.  

A few weeks ago we planted several of the brilliant red Manhattan Gladiolas, and they are on their way up.  I will smile and think of my friend when they bloom.  And, perhaps after reading this, you have become inspired to plant a few as well.  Norman would like that.
