Sunday Thoughts ~ Smiles

“Literature and butterflies are the two sweetest passions known to man.” ~ Vladimir Nabokov

Good Sunday morning, dear friends.  It is a pretty morning here in our West Virginia hills.  Hopefully, it is where you are as well.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could stop time,  for just a few days?  It passes way too quickly and in a blink, it will be autumn.  But meanwhile, let us enjoy this season.  To me,  one of the sweetest things to accompany summer is the butterfly.  They are beautiful, delightful to watch, and bring us smiles.

Butterfly Laughter, by Katherine Mansfield
“In the middle of our porridge plates
There was a blue butterfly painted
And each morning we tried who should reach the
butterfly first.
Then the Grandmother said: “Do not eat the poor
butterfly.”
That made us laugh.
Always she said it and always it started us laughing.
It seemed such a sweet little joke.
I was certain that one fine morning
The butterfly would fly out of our plates,
Laughing the teeniest laugh in the world,
And perch on the Grandmother’s lap.”
“Beautiful and graceful, varied and enchanting, small but approachable, butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life.  And everyone deserves a little sunshine.” ~ Jeffrey Glassberg

  1. Sandra, butterflies flitting around my garden brings much joy. I love running around trying to get the perfect photo as they land on a flower. The quotes and images are a beautiful start to a Sunday morning. Wishing you and Michael a lovely day!

    1. Many thanks, dear friend. Wishing you and your lovely family a beautiful and peaceful Sunday.

  2. I don’t know how anyone that views your beautiful butterfly images could not believe there is a divine creator! Their exquisite beauty glories God in His magnificence.
Thank you for such beauty. I have a passion for butterflies. They bring me joy. Your varieties are so lovely.
    Have a lovely Sunday!

    1. Good morning, Bonnie. I agree with your every word. He provides such beauty for our enjoyment. I see His hand at every turn.
Thank you for your kind words and your visit. Many blessings, Bonnie.

  3. I love butterflies and this is the most charming poem and beautiful quotes and images. Nicely chosen.

    Have a wonderful new week!

  4. I love butterflies. They remind me of my Mom. Beautiful pictures and lovely quotes. Have a wonderful week ahead!

  5. What a lovely post…I had to pin a few of these gorgeous photos for possibly painting. Were photos two and six, yours??? since I didn’t see an accreditation? So, I can give you or the photographer a credit, if I use the photo for inspiration? Please give me a note if they are, Sandi

    1. Hi Sandi. None of the photos are mine, they are from tumblr. That is at the bottom of the post. Rarely, do I ever find the name of the photographer, I wish I did. Because usually, the photos I find are outstanding. On 2 of the photos in this post it actually said where the photos were taken, which I noted, but not the name of the photographer.

  6. How lovely they are! And your last one does seem to be a flying flower. I love the Mansfield story and the Angelou quote does remind us of the not so pretty or easy steps one goes through to become beautiful in character. I love autumn so much but I’m trying to enjoy each summer day and not wish it away. Butterflies in our garden does help. Good Sunday to you, Sandra!

    1. Hello Dewena. I do love butterflies and I know you enjoy them in your garden. Like you, I enjoy fall. We are having a very hot summer. So, I will welcome cooler days.
Thanks for your visit and have a lovely week ahead.

Dear friend … What tenderness do you have today your quotes dedicated to butterflies. Excellent quotes that have made me meditate this morning, still not hot.
They have tenderness, wisdom and it has been a delight to go through your dates among which I highlight because it has especially made me meditate: “… and when all wars end, a butterfly will continue to be beautiful.” ~ Ruskin Bond
I hope so … I wish when this war against that virus that wants to destroy us ends …
    A big hug

    1. Dear Dolores, thank you so much for your beautiful kind words. I can always count on you to understand what I am trying to convey. Wishing you a beautiful week. And stay well, my friend.❤

  8. I have taken joy in every photo and every thought offered in this post, Sandra. It was a real delight to visit today. We don’t see such beautiful butterflies in our corner of the world, so it was lovely to see yours. And I LOVED that Katherine Mansfield quotation. Thank you, sweet friend.

    1. Hello, my friend. Thank you for your sweet words. We don’t see the butterflies in our area that we once did. So, that makes the ones we do see special. They are a little crazy for zinnias and cosmos – so you might plant some for them next year. Wishing you a lovely week and stay well.

  9. Beautiful images, Sandra. I don’t know how long it takes you to assemble your themed photos, but thank you. The French variety is outstanding, so is the the GIF image at the end. That is not to diminish any of the others, but I have been fortunate enough to capture most of those varieties myself in years past.

    1. Rita, it does take me quite a while to find what I am on the hunt for and match with my quotes. Thank heavens I do have my volumes upon volumes of quotes organized. However, I do it a little at a time. We have not seen the butterflies this year as we have in the past. You are a talented soul with the camera, it has never been one of my abilities. Wishing you a great remainder of the week.
